Who am I?

From Bordeaux (and Vendée), not Paris. My name is Emmanuelle Maréchal, and unlike my very French name doesn’t tell you, I am a child of the African diaspora, more precisely from Douala, Cameroon, where I was born and spent part of my childhood.

I think in French, speak in Italian, and work in English. After fourteen years of roaming around Europe, I decided to call a small southern Italian town home.

I am a freelance sub-editor and translator for luxury fashion e-commerce and a writer passionate about her job, languages, culture, and exploring everything related to the African diaspora.

What is Le Journal Curioso?

Le Journal Curioso is a newsletter about the fashion industry from the perspective of a professional whose job is often underrated.

It is also a space for culture and storytelling—with a fashion twist—about the African diaspora and living in Italy.

How often do you publish?

Three times a month, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

One time a month, I publish a public post about fashion or culture (or both). Sometimes, I write about my family; other times, I share articles I write for the independent French publication Naïfs Magazine, or I enjoy debunking the myth of the French/Parisian woman.

Always on Wednesdays and Sundays, twice a month, I write two columns under the paywall:

  • The Underrated Fashion Professionals Talks is a series of interviews with fashion professionals about a specific aspect of the industry. For example, I went deep into fashion criticism with fashion and culture journalist Amy Odell, fashion writer and coach Philippe Pourhashemi, and Silvia Schirinzi, the fashion director of the Italian magazine Rivista Studio here and here. All the pieces I have just linked are not under the paywall to let you discover this column.

  • Black Europeans You Should Know is a column born out of my frustration with seeing mainstream media in English, French, and Italian centre the Black experience around the USA and the UK. As a French-Cameroonian who has had the privilege to live in different European countries and thus explore the diversity of Blackness, I will, through that column, tell the stories of Black Europeans whose stories have been forgotten. Read the first one here.

Your support makes this newsletter possible and more fun to write. With love from Apulia,

From South Italy with love, a curious French-Cameroonian multilingual fashion professional writing unapologetically about the industry she is working in and the African diaspora in Europe.
