Journaling The Process is an audio format through which I share the behind-the-scenes of my life as a writer and Le Journal Curioso.
I miss sending you letters. This is the first thing I wanted to tell you. Since that day in July 2023, when I pressed “publish” here, I have sent 63 letters. I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but I knew I wanted to write, and since then, I am still amazed I have been able to gather people as curious as I am about culture, fashion, and identity. So, the second thing I want to tell you is thank you for your patience. I haven’t hit that “publish” button for two months, and for a good reason: I finally have work that allows me to be more stable financially, and therefore more focused on the newsletter.
I am coming back slowly, but surely, and this is exactly what I am talking about in today’s audio: Le Journal Curioso’s return. But before telling you about what awaits you at the end of May - yes, this is when I will be back sending you letters, business as usual - I let you inside my world as a freelancer juggling changes and new clients. As I am writing this, in the audio, you will hear me talk about two new working opportunities, but since then, a third has come in, but I’ll only talk about it once I’ve reached the three-month mark of employment.
Now let’s get into some Le Journal Curioso thoughts/news!
In the voice note, I wonder what value I can add to the newsletter after I noticed the people who unsubscribed from the paid option kindly indicated it was because of the price. My offer is 6€ per month and 48€ a year for two stories under the paywall and one free story. Each piece/interview under the paywall is thoroughly researched and/or requires months or weeks to write. Here are some examples here and here.
I also think about the meaning behind the word community and what I wish it would look like for me, despite admitting I am not a very social media-savvy person (or not to say absolutely not).
The creation of a quarterly reading club is an idea I have been having for a while, after participating in one organised on Zoom by the brilliant
. I said book club in the audio because I want it to be a mix of critiquing fashion journalism articles, and me sharing with you some of my favourite reads. One thing I want to add is to share books that haven’t been translated into English. The reason behind that choice is that though we say we live in a globalised world, I really feel we live in an Anglophile world, which is fine, but also means our view of the world is reduced. A good example of that is how Blackness is seen under the American lens and how it invisibilises other Blacknesses. It is a point of view that can be applied to many topics worldwide. I have the chance to speak three languages, so I hope to, at my modest scale, contribute to expanding our view of the world through books.
