Loved this analysis so much, thanks!! I watch k-dramas half for the style some of the time :) I loved the fashion in The Glory for example. I think styling in k-dramas is used so effectively. You can pick a character's personality from mile away just by looking at their clothing.

Truly love all of your writing but this one hits so many buttons for me as a casual kdrama enjoyer since youth and a fan of peter do!! Really thoughtful interview with such an interesting point of view! It’s true that my first thought on why Korean fashion brands don’t have as much visibility in western markets was immediately sizing discrepancies!! As much as I love the styles I see from Korean brands, they will never fit on my body ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I can still appreciate them and how “put together” everything looks! Really thoughtful points from Jessica about scaling issues as well, who would of course have firsthand experience with that! Thank you both for a great read 💗

Great piece. Really makes me think about how K Pop is such a global powerhouse but other aspects of Korean culture really haven't become global like the fashion despite the fact the quality exists. Juxtapose this with Japan where Japanese fashion and culture has become a part of the greater global culture whether it be through fashion or anime, but J Pop hasn't really left the country.

I so enjoyed this piece! I'm a very casual watcher of K dramas so no expert here (am excited to start watching 'Eve'!) but I related a lot to what was being discussed here by yourself and Jessica...when they got to the bit in 'Queen of Tears' where they were in Frankfurt, I was like, "oh yes, the requisite 'European' locale bit of the big budget K-drama", which feels to me also an example of the need for western/European validation mentioned by Jessica. At the same time K dramas did so much for Korean tourism...I remember the 'Winter Sonata' tours being advertised by travel agencies in Singapore (where I'm from). I was also thinking that K fashion may not be at the forefront in K dramas, but they certainly set the beauty trends in Asia...men started getting "Korean" perms to get that wavy hair, women bought the Crash Landing on You lipstick like there was no tomorrow (I think it was YSL, it sold out for months).
