I really love Eugene Rabkin's brutal honesty and his reviews have in fact helped me to narrow down my choices when shopping, to think twice about buying from certain brands. So for me, true fashion criticism is necessary!
I am delighted to read Eugene is one of the few whose criticism actually translate into buying decisions. It is so rare to read so!
I really enjoy Eugene Rabkin's Style Zeitgeist podcast episodes with Philippe Pourhashemi for that reason. I am not surprised both are quite the outsiders for their views. Onre thing I appreciate about them is how, in the podcast, they always give you context as to how it was to access shows, how was the crowd, etc. I don't think it is an aspect of fashion show we hear much about.
I think Eugene has such strong views on his likes and dislikes that you can see through his willingness for a fashion that is more qualitative (and elitist) with substance. I don't always agree with him though. His episode with Angelo Flaccavento about diversity wasn't my favourite at all, but he is a a necessary voice.
Subrina Heyink is another person who isn’t shy about expressing her views. I don’t know if she’d consider herself a fashion critic? But I once again appreciate her honesty.
Subrina is a gem! I really think she is not to be put into a box, but if you'd ask I'd say she is a stylist very well-informed and has strong opinions about fashion. She is actually one of the first people I followed here rightly because her newsletter is so much more than styling advice.
I actually couldn’t find the episode with Angelo on the Stylezeigist episode guide, but think I found it on You Tube. The episode about political correctness?
Wow, what a wonderful conversation to have with Amy Odell, I can only think that in todays time the most important thing is for written content is: publications backed up by readers. It’s pretty insane what Amy mentioned about TikTok and runway reviews. Regarding runway reviews, I think they are more for people in the industry who want to know more details about it. I do love readying Cathy Horyn because the amount of information she has on the brands from covering them so long, it’s so interesting. But besides that, I would only read reviews in order to understand something that I want to write about.
I will be re-reading this article a few more times! What a great interview!
I am so glad you enjoyed reading this interview, especially as it is the first of a series of three on the same topic.
I completely agree with you that today publications backed up by readers is most important in today's time, but I also think there are more and more smaller publications that are finding ways to allow for their writers and editors to create enriching stories.
As industry insiders, I believe we may think too highly of the runway reviews by legacy media when actually what Amy says is right about TikTok. I, myself, now rely more on so-called fashion commentators to get my brain to function, and do more thorough research haha. Of course, there are fashion critics that I enjoy reading for their depth of knowledge.

No, his word isn’t gospel - I quite like Our Legacy! I haven’t heard the episode with Angelo yet.
I will have a look at Our Legacy as I don't know well the brand.
Please do listen to it!
